'Did It Not Captivate?' Why a Shortened Fixture Remained Every Bit a Proper Test.

Displayed inside a display cabinet on the upper level of the iconic Melbourne stadium is housed a vibrant pink ensemble donned by Robbie Williams. The performance in front of a massive crowd of fans was seen as a success.

You might not appreciate Robbie Williams. Maybe you feel he is the greatest gift to music in history. Or you could adopt a reasonable stance, acknowledging that some songs are belting while others are terrible.

The central idea is that enjoyment can manifest in countless ways. You like what you like. There is no one way to craft music or even five-day cricket.

The Unrivalled Depth of The Test Format

Test cricket boasts peerless complexity. It's difficult to think of another sport where the contest is so dependent on external factors.

The elements, the time of day, the ball – the list is endless. Crucially is the pitch.

If the long game is art, the strip is the blank slate on which the cricketers craft their legacy.

An Abstract Contest: The MCG Match

The fourth Ashes Test between Australia and England was the game deconstructed, the great game dismantled and reconstructed in an unusual manner.

Let's be clear, this isn't a justification of the pitch which yielded a win and the second two-day Test of the series.

Having 10mm of grass on the pitch, resulting in 36 wickets falling in less than a brief period, is not a fair contest between batter and bowler.

A Diverse Legacy: The Essence of Test Cricket

But any idea this was a inferior show, one that should be footnoted as illegitimate, is mistaken.

The format is a rich tapestry, 2,615 parts and counting. On occasion, as witnessed recently, the ball behaves unpredictably for the fast men. In contrast, it turns square on a spinning track. At other venues, the pitch is flat as a pancake, other times it explodes.

The thrillers are even more exciting owing to the investment committed in other matches.

Adaptation: The Real Challenge

Specific conditions are tolerated more freely than others.

The debate in during the match was that the balance was skewed excessively towards the bowlers. That the top batters were hindered from showcasing their talents.

The format is about adapting to challenges – reading the conditions and adapting appropriately. The two highest individual innings were made by recognized stars. One side made more mistakes than the other, and thus were defeated.

Pure Elation: The Fan Perspective

Attempt to convince the supporters who have suffered 18 winless matches that this was not entertaining.

In one section of the MCG, thousands made noise and chanted, generating a carnival vibe in a stronghold of sport.

There was optimism as the fielding side surged, advantage when players responded, and pure joy when the victory was confirmed.

Extreme Ends: The Variety of Test Matches

The MCG has form with pitch problems. In the past, a match there featured a wicket with the character of a a non-event.

That fixture was a slog, with limited drama and slow play. The two-day game and that drawn affair are diametrically opposed points of the scale – both are not the standard, yet historical weight can be attached to them.

Four Tests into the ongoing battle, it is the shortest games that will remain iconic in the collective consciousness.

"This isn't the demise of the long game at all," said a former player. "Fans who have been privileged to see these two days have been given some genuine drama. Different entertainment."

Small Victories: Building for the Future

In the build-up to this Test, the skipper addressed the media like a man carrying the weight of the world on his mind.

The players delivered for him, reinstating the smile to his persona.

Different players performed with key contributions. These are incremental gains, certainly not enough to guarantee long-term stability, but a foundation to develop from.

In the end, this MCG win joins other notable performances in dead rubbers.

As the supporters left into a stunning sunset, the players assembled on the field to commence their own celebrations.

Enjoy the drink, boys. It's well deserved.
