Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of entry passages leading to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - imposed militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of British forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey commented. "Including them were numerous UK service members on duty over the festive period. This mission, to take out militants who endanger our safety, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in the country, following an assault killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
